SXSW Midnight Feature: Jez Jerzy (George the Hedgehog) dir. Wojciech Wawszczyk, Jakub Tarkowski, and Tomek Lesniak

By Leah Shore

There we were at SXSW 2011, watching movie after movie with our butts slowly getting numb. My friend and fellow animator, Michaela Olsen, and I were upset to find out that there were barely any animated features. Until we laid our eyes upon a film entitled Jez Jerzy (George the Hedgehog). We now had a quest to see it and headed to the Alamo Lamar for this Midnight Feature (for those of you who are not Austin natives, the Alamo is an awesome theater that serves food and alcohol!).

It was AMAZING. I think most Americans who are used to Pixar/Disney/commercial animation would have hated it and maybe even walked out. But Michaela and I loved it. Based on a comic book, the film’s animation and character design were reminiscent of Beavis and Butthead and other 90’s animation, which were purposely crudely animated in the most perfect way. The Polish animators objectify American women in a way that I would: gigantic boobies with constant nipplage, tight and tiny outfits with thongs peering out, drinking all the time, and screwing the heck out of this anti-hero, hottie-hedgehog, Jerzy. I think prepubescent boys (I suppose I am a prepubescent boy on the inside) would be most likely to love this.

Basically this Jerzy (George for you non-Polish-speaking people) gets all the ladies, drinks constantly, skateboards, and is the man. A mad scientist decides that he wants to clone Jerzy and make him a star sensation to manipulate the world. The scientist’s lackeys are Nazi skinheads who can’t seem to get laid, and their repressions manifest themselves into wanting to kill Jerzy. I wonder why. My favorite scene was when the clone humps an electric outlet in a porn shop, blowing it up and making thousands of blow-up dolls fly over the city.

If you’re looking for a mind-numbing (I’m saying this with love), altering, and life-changing experience, watch this. It’s like if Superjail! and a raunchy, Polish comic book had a love child. I wish more films were made in this style. Please find that inner prepubescent-boy in you and see it! I’m sure this will be shown at tons of undergrounds festivals. Keep an eye out! Or a penis. Or a boobie. I wonder if Sonic and Jerzy are related. I wonder if they had a love child, would it hump while spinning in a ball and killing bad guys?
