Thao & Mirah (ST)

By Lee Cahill

Every article I have read about Thao and Mirah’s collaboration on their new album would lead me to believe that these two ladies are complete opposites. But c’mon, they’re both indie female singer songwriters, they both make adorable music with their pitchy, but lovable, voices, they’re good friends, and for goodness sake they recently toured together – it’s not so outlandish that they made a record together! Though I’ll admit that Mirah has an undeniable innocence to her voice (which is incredibly charming), whereas Thao Nguyen has a more confidently cool sound.

Mirah’s flawless and prolific songwriting that allows her to tackle deep romantic feelings with simple metaphors has made many of her records prized possessions in my collection. Thao Nguyen, on the other hand, is less weathered as a songwriter, but has certainly garnered acclaim in the indie music world as the lead singer of The Get Down Stay Down.

Needless to say, when I found out these talented women planned to make a record together, I was pretty darn excited!!! And I think you’ll see in their performance below of “Folks” (from the album) that the outcome is greater than the sum of its parts.

Well that was a lovely acoustic performance, but please note that the album ranges from chilled out acoustic vibes to upbeat electro-pop jams!

See them live at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on June 8th. Full tour dates HERE
