A Weekly Guide To Your New Obsession

By Sarah Besnard and Lee Cahill

Artist: Frànçois and the Atlas Mountains

From: Bordeaux, France/ Bristol, UK
Sounds Like: Bilingual Euro smooth-pop inspired by 70s African music
Reason to listen: Frànçois is a touring member of the notable, indie-pop band Camera Obscura (4AD). Plus, he just signed a record deal with a great label – Domino Records (Animal Collective, The Dirty Projectors, Franz Ferdinand, Elliot Smith, etc).

Artist: Warm Brains

From: London, UK
Sounds Like: Understated Rock n’ Roll. A wall of sound comprised of echoing guitars and male vocals that serve more as a textural instrument rather than a voice that commands you to listen to the lyrics.
Reason to listen: Warm Brain’s singer, Rory Attwell was a member of the punk trio Test Icicles and the post punk band KASMs. He’s also a hell of a producer (Male Bonding, Sleeping States, Mafia Lights, etc)

Artist: Chad VanGaleen

From: Calgary, Canada
Sounds Like: Spacey Psych Folk, a modern twist on the echo-y, desperate, harmonized vocals of Simon & Garfunkle.
Reason to listen: He’s signed to Sub Pop (Fleet Foxes, Beach House, The Go! Team), a label that can do no wrong! Plus, he’s an illustrator, animator, and musician so he’s well rounded as an artist.
A few upcoming shows in the US –
June 19 with Nat Baldwin @Ithaca, New York
June 20 @Rock and Roll Hotel w/ Nat Baldwin, Washington, Washington
June 22 TT the Bears w/ Nat Baldwin, Boston, MA
