A Weekly Guide To Your New Obsession

By Sarah Besnard

Artist: Dent May

Listen: “Fun” 7” single out September 13th via Paw Tracks

From:  Oxford, Mississippi
Sounds like: Dent May croons and swoons as you sink into your beanbag chair, turn on the lava lamp, and let the good vibes wash over you.
Reason to listen: Stepping away from his usual “Magnificent Ukulele”, Dent turned to more psych synth tunes on this record. As he would say, “That’s what’s up!”
Shows: With Julian Lynch + Prince Rama DJ set 7/21 Glasslands Brooklyn, New York With Real Estate 07/24 Hoboken, NJ Maxwell’s

Artist: The Guru

From: Connecticut
Sounds Like: Youthful Pop, a mix of Born Ruffians-like vocals with Jonquil/ Trophy Wife tropical guitars.
Reason to listen: “Native Sun”, the band’s first album was just released and it’s the perfect soundtrack for the beginning of the summer: fresh, light and upbeat.

Artist: U.S. Girls

From: Mississippi
Sounds Like: A Lo-Fi droning, groaning twist on surf rock
Reason to listen:  “If These Walls Could Talk” – from the 12” split with Slim Twig is out now on Palmist label (Fat Cat sister label). The video was apparently made “using nothing more than a digital camera, two lamps, a stool, some dollar store makeup and a bit of whiskey.” Great Job!
