Rita Indiana y Los Misterios!!!

By Lee Cahill

I was recently exposed to Rita Indiana at the Alternative Latin Music Conference at NYC’s Summerstage. And let me tell you, she puts on one hell of a show with her flamboyant, energetic male dancers. Rita’s music combines synthesizers and a ton of attitude with extremely danceable merengue beats.

Not only is this 6-foot tall, Dominican, lesbian rocker an excellent singer, she is also an acclaimed novelist AND she is writing a screenplay for a film that she’ll be working on with girlfriend and filmmaker, Noelia Quintero. (Wow I feel lazy.)

Below is the music video for one of her biggest songs “La Hora De Volve” or “Time to Return” off her debut full-length album El Juidero. It’s jam packed with 80’s style and colors, old school animation, and those flamboyant dancers I mentioned. Apparently the lyrics are about telling immigrants to take a boat back to their country… but don’t ask me to translate.

Seriously, watch this.
